Since the ancient days of gladiators, spectators
have enjoyed the thrill of betting on combative
sporting contests. Every moment of a fight seems
much more exciting when there is money riding on the
outcome. Today is no different, as a growing number
of people are betting on modern-day gladiatorial
contests - mixed martial arts events.

This event is being titled
Stacked because of the intense card that is scheduled. Silva
and Sherk will both be looking to defend their titles, Silva
at middleweight, and Sherk at lightweight. Both of these
individuals gained their titles at UFC 64 and will be taking
on formidable challengers. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira steps
into the Octagon for the first time for a heavyweight war
with Heath Herring and Tito Ortiz intends to put a painful
end to Rashad Evans' perfect 15-0 record. Let the fireworks
begin. UFC 73, loaded with UFC superstars, takes place LIVE
from ARCO Arena in Sacramento, Calif. Saturday, July 7,
2007.
Silva is a Brazilian who has competed in Cage Rage, PRIDE,
Shooto, and Rumble on the Rock. He has beaten some of the
biggest names in the business including Rich Franklin and
Jeremy Horn. His record stands at 18-4 with 10 knockouts and
3 submissions after his triangle choke win over Travis
Lutter on Feb. 3rd at UFC 67.
Sherk has done almost everything he can in mixed martial
arts fighting. His record is 33-2 with wins in both UFC and
PRIDE. His style has drawn comparisons to former
welterweight champ Matth Hughes, whom Sherk fought to a
close decision loss for a title. Sherk has eight knockouts
and thirteen submissions to his credit, but hasn't fought
since winning the title over Kenny Florian back in October
at UFC 64.

The Ultimate Fighting
Championship is a test of pure gladiator fighting
skills. The fight occurs inside an octagon that is 32
feet across. The fighters are contained by a 5 foot
link fence. Most participants have martial arts
training in some discipline, however, this is by no
means a requirement. It has a no holds barred
philosophy although some rules have been added
recently.
Although there can be a
lot of blood, fights usually end with joint locks or
choke holds and it is generally the more skilled
opponent that wins. Size is an advantage, but skill in
ending the fights with a finishing move (choke out,
joint locks, etc.) are the best. |
