Former UFC heavyweight champion
Frank Mir will take on Justin McCully at UFC 86 on July 5 in Las
Vegas. Frank Mir (11-3-0) last stepped into the cage at 81
defeating Brock Lesnar by submission in the first round.
Mir is riding high after a come-from-behind victory over Brock
Lesnar in February. McCully, meanwhile, will return from
injuries and fight in the octagon for the first time since his
successful UFC debut nearly a year ago.
Mir, a former UFC heavyweight champion, earned co-main-event
status during his UFC 81 fight with former NCAA Division
I wrestling champion and WWE performer Lesnar. On the verge of
suffering a TKO early in the fight, Mir got a break when Lesnar
was deducted a point for blows to the back of the head. Lesnar
continued to deliver brutal strikes, but Mir survived to slap on
a fight-ending kneebar just 90 seconds into the fight.
Mir, who suffered a devastating motorcycle accident in 2004,
picked up his second straight victory and his third win in his
past four fights.
McCully (8-3-2) has not fought since April of last year, due to
an injury that forced him off a scheduled bout at
UFC 77.
McCully's last win came at UFC Fight Night 9 where he defeated
Antoni Hardonk by unanimous decision.
With his victory over Antoni Hardonk a year ago, McCully, a
member of Tito Ortiz's Team Punishment, is now 3-0 since
returning to MMA after a three-year break from the sport. He has
a four-fight win streak and has won five of his past six fights
overall.
Joe "Daddy" Stevenson will take on Gleison Tibau at UFC 86, July
5 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Stevenson is coming off a hard fought
loss for the UFC lightweight title to the "Prodigy"
BJ Penn at UFC 80.
Joe Stevenson (28-8) will look to get back in the 155-pound
title hunt when he takes on Gleison Tibau (15-5) at UFC 86 on
July 5 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Joe Stevenson is coming off a very rough submission loss to
arguably the top mixed martial artist in the game, that being BJ
Penn. Tibau is coming off a loss as well but to top lightweight
Tyson Griffin at UFC 81. It will be interesting to see how both
react to tough losses.
UFC lightweight Melvin Guillard (21-7-2 MMA, 4-3 UFC), who
briefly left the organization after back-to-back first-round
submission losses, will return to the UFC to fight Dennis Siver
(11-5 MMA, 1-2 UFC) at UFC 86.
Melvin Guillard earned a unanimous-decision victory over Eric
Regan (9-9) in a Rage in the Cage event last month and now set
to return to the UFC against Siver.
Dennis Siver is the 29-year-old fighter had been booked to take
on Guillard. The German made his octagon debut at
UFC 70
and suffered an 81-second submission loss to Jess Liaudin.
Siver bounced back for a second-round knockout of Naoyuki Kotani
at UFC 75 before a unanimous-decision loss to Gray
Maynard earlier this year at UFC Fight Night 12.

The Ultimate Fighting
Championship is a test of pure gladiator fighting
skills. The fight occurs inside an octagon that is 32
feet across. The fighters are contained by a 5 foot
link fence. Most participants have martial arts
training in some discipline, however, this is by no
means a requirement. It has a no holds barred
philosophy although some rules have been added
recently.
Although there can be a
lot of blood, fights usually end with joint locks or
choke holds and it is generally the more skilled
opponent that wins. Size is an advantage, but skill in
ending the fights with a finishing move (choke out,
joint locks, etc.) are the best. |
